Forms of Comfort,
2024

Forms of Comfort is a collection of handmade clay models crafted to explore themes of delicacy and fragility. The models are made using air-dry clay and have been captured using Polycam.

When navigating the brief of ‘comfort’ Lucy found herself drawn to delicate textures such as lace and silk. She paired this with her love of ceramics, cups, and kitchen-ware. She began to observe how both fabric and clay are equally frail and breakable, yet each are completely different to handle.

This sparked her experimentation with imprinting lace into clay to create forms that to the eye appear to be made of material but are solid when in the hand. Lucy expanded this idea and created a collection of ‘unusable’ cutlery and plates to use for a dinner party (‘Table Manners’). The intention of these models is to explore the beauty in delicate objects, but also the wariness that surrounds objects that must be ‘handled with care’.
